Only then did she finally begin to cry.
Now
Eleanor
The week leading up to her dadâs anniversary passed by, as it always did, at an alarming rate. One minute it was Monday evening and Eleanor was researching traditional 1950s pageant gowns for Heidi, the next it was Friday night and she was being handed a large glass of wine by Sal in the pub.
âHow are you doing?â her friend asked. âThis weekend is a bit of a tough one, isnât it?â
âYou can say that again.â She took a sip of wine and swallowed her sadness down along with it. âIâm doing all right though. And besides, my mumâs invited Fin to the lunch so at least that will be something to distract her.â
âDistractions are good â¦â Sal murmured, a note of scepticism creeping into her voice.
âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âIâm not looking at you like anything.â
âYes, you are.â
Sal shrugged innocently. âYou just seem to be spending a lot of time with someone you were adamant on avoiding a few weeks ago.â
âNot really,â Eleanor replied defensively. âMy mum invited him to this, not me.â
âAnd then thereâs that weird old-people thing youâre doing.â
âThe photoshoot is a one-off favour.â
âAll right, fine. If you say so.â Sal held her hands up. âAlso, I still donât understand why anyone would choose to hang out with old people. Are you sure thereâs not something else in it for you?â She winked.
âIâm sure.â Eleanor let out a little laugh. âYou know you will be an old person too one day?â
Sal looked at her aghast. âNot if I can help it!â
âHmm,â Eleanor mused. âWhatever you say.â
âAlso, speaking of getting old, I still canât believe I have my mumâs seventieth coming up. Iâm so pissed itâs on the same day as Lauraâs wedding. I really wanted to go.â
Salâs words hit Eleanor like a punch in the stomach.
No.
Oh sweet Jesus, no.
âEleanor, whatâs wrong?â She felt Salâs hand reach for her. âYou look like youâve seen a ghost.â
âLauraâs wedding,â Eleanor managed weakly.
âYes?â
âOliver.â The name sent nausea through her body.
âWhat about him?â Salâs confused face came sharply into focus.
âI havenât told Laura about Oliver. She thinks heâs coming to the wedding with me. This is a disaster. I canât turn up and sit next to an empty place. It will be too late to cancel; the wedding is in like two weeksâ time or something ridiculous!â Eleanor garbled, the panic pushing all of her thoughts out of her mouth uncensored.
âItâs actually next weekend, but thatâs by the by,â Sal corrected. âEleanor, donât worry. We will sort it.â The calming, steady voice of her friend soothed her slightly. âI will sort it.â
Eleanor gulped her wine and watched as Sal pulled out her phone and began typing furiously. âIâm emailing her now and explaining everything, just sit and keep drinking. Actually no, maybe order some food.â She eyed her warily. âWe donât want you getting drunk and disorderly.â
Eleanorâs mind was racing. How could she have forgotten? How stupid could she have been?
âDone!â Sal announced.
